The Zwarte Zee IV was Smit's new flagship, after the 1933 Black Sea was renamed Zwarte Zee III, and later Ierse Zee, due to the name confusion. Like its predecessor, it was briefly the strongest tugboat in the world, with 9000 hp and 73 tons of bollard pull, but was soon surpassed by stronger tugs.

The Zwarte Zee was designed by the engineer JCA Hoogenbosch and was built at J. & K. Smit's Scheepswerfs NV in Kinderdijk. The launch was on October 12, 1962 and the christening ceremony was performed by Princess Beatrix. The official sea trial and handover took place on April 18, 1963 and after showing herself in Hamburg, Oslo and London, the Zwarte Zee departed Rotterdam on May 6, 1963 for her first towing trip.

On December 15, 1983, the Zwarte Zee arrived in Singapore and was laid up. On May 1, 1984, the tug was towed by the Smit London together with the tanker Petrola 26. On May 14, 1984, they arrived in Kaohsiung to be scrapped.
