De Steenbank, together with sister ship Schouwenbank, was the first Europoort tugboat to be operated by L. Smit & Co. built in order to assist the large ships that were expected there.
With a length of 30 meters and an installed capacity of 1250 HP, these beautifully designed ships were a welcome addition to the fleet of smaller harbor tugs that mainly operated for the city ports. Later, Smit's tugboats operating in the Europoort area entered into a partnership in a new operating company: the Nieuwe Rotterdamse Sleepdienst (NRS).
Until recently, the Steenbank, which left the port of Rotterdam in 1980, was employed by the Belgian Navy, but was disposed of at the end of 2015. The ship is currently being restored, will be brought back to the NRS house style and will become part of the Stichting Tugboothaven Maassluis.
